PACKING ESSENTIALS 101

"When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money". â€“ Susan Heller

When you know there's a trip coming up, there are two types of packers. The type A's, who make lists weeks or even months ahead of their trip and check off each item as they continuously drudge away at it. And the type B's, who leave it a few days, or even hours before their plane takes off- throwing whatever they think they might need into their bag. To the compulsively organized, and the hot messes of travel, our tips might speak to you.

1.) Invest in a money belt! Then make sure you take and wear it under your clothing! Although you may think you look ridiculous, by separating your cash (and keeping a photocopy of your passport) in the belt, you won't risk losing everything you have to an inconspicuous pickpocket.

2.) On many airlines, you can take a carry-on bag, a checked luggage bag, and a personal item (such as a CPAP machine bag, laptop bag, or purse). Make sure you check out the airline’s website before starting to pack. That way, you know what your allowance is. It’s also best to consider what type of trip and region you’re going to. If you’re visiting a mountainous region, crowded areas or taking public transport- it may be best to use a backpack. This will help you maneuver around easier, however, if you do take a backpack, consider getting small locks or zip-ties to secure the zippers on your bag so no one can open it without you knowing. But, if you’re renting a car, going to a resort or bringing formal clothing- a suitcase might be the best option for you.

3.) Keep your essential items in your carry-on! Always keep your camera, prescription medications, credit cards, money, etc. with you. It’s also a great idea to pack a few pairs of underwear, socks, shirts and pants in your carry-on in case your checked bag gets lost or held up at the airport.

4.) Try to wear your bulky items on the plane, rather than packing them and taking up a lot of space in your luggage. If you’re bringing a sweater or coat, wear it!

5.) If you’re going for a long trip, take powdered laundry detergent so you can wash your clothes in a bucket or sink. This will help you minimize how much clothing you bring and lighten your luggage.

6.) If you roll your clothing rather than fold them, you’ll have less wrinkles!

7.) Zip-lock bags make it a lot easier to organize your bathroom products, electronic cords, etc.

8.) Use our packing list to make sure you have everything you’ll need on your journey!
